Athletic Greens Review

Is Athletic Greens a legit greens supplement? Read our Athletic Greens review to find out.

For diets, regardless of eating style, the basic advice (one that always works) is keeping things in the right portions aka the balanced diet. The problem with the “balanced” diet is not the actual balancing part, but the fact that a good chunk of it is made of greens – something not everyone can eat readily.

That is where greens powders come in. Greens powders are meant to help people complete their daily greens “quota.” One of these products is Athletic Greens, a greens powder supplement that describes itself as a delicious blend of 75 superfoods, probiotics, vitamins and minerals.

Dosage and Ingredients

What we are shown here is half and half when it comes to transparency. Athletic Greens is transparent towards the vitamins and minerals blend, but decided to forego transparency beyond it.

We’re not really fans of proprietary blends because consumers should know how much of anything is inside a supplement they’re taking. This is actually weird considering Athletic Greens is accepted for professional sport consumption.

Vitamins and Minerals

Perhaps the most impressive part about Athletic Greens’ formula is the vitamins and minerals blend. Not only do we see a lot of key nutrients, we also see that the ingredients are in premium forms. When it comes to formulas, premium ingredients aren’t just to make the product cost more; premium ingredients help improve bioavailability which results to a more efficient nutrient usage.

Some of these premiums are B12 (methylcobalamin), B6 (pyridoxine hydrochlorine), Folate (5-MTHF), Zinc (Zinc Citrate), and Chromium (Chromium picolinate).

Alkaline, Nutrient-Dense Raw Superfood Complex

This is Athletic Greens’ main greens blend and seems to pretty much have the usual ingredients you’d expect from a typical greens product. Notable ones are spirulina, inulin, and grape seed because we have them in their standardized forms.

Standardization allows us to see how much of the active compound we want in a specific ingredient is actually provided per serving. The rest aren’t bad per se, but could have been better like green tea extract.

Green tea is already popular for being healthy, but what makes it really good is its epigallocatechin gallate content or EGCG, and we don’t know how much EGCG we’re getting.

Nutrient Dense Natural Extracts, Herbs & Antioxidants

This blend isn’t just an antioxidant blend, it also seems to be Athletic Greens’ anti-stress blend due to the presence of rhodiola rosea and ashwagandha. It should also be noted that it has milk thistle which is known for its silymarine content. Silymarine is an ingredient people recommend for liver health, as it helps boost glutathione production. Glutathione is the body’s most abundant antioxidant and is considered its primary barrier against oxidation and free radical damage.

Digestive Enzyme & Super Mushroom Complex

Digestive enzymes help improve gut health as well as nutrient absorption. The angle used for mushrooms have more to do with the immune system and general health and wellbeing.

Dairy Free Probiotics 7.2 billion CFU

The last blend made use of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum. These probiotics help improve the population of “good” gut bacteria which then dominoes into a better immunity as well as tissue repair and recovery.

L.acidophilus in particular is linked to lowering cholesterol levels and weight loss, while B.bifidum has been linked to reducing symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and overall immunity.

Nutrition and Supplement facts

According to the manufacturer, there are 75 ingredients in Athletic Greens including vitamins and minerals, probiotics and digestive enzymes, which are claimed to support energy, recovery, immunity and digestion.

Athletic Greens Supplement Facts

Who is Athletic Greens for?

Judging from how it is formulated, Athletic Greens seems to be formulated for the usual consumer who just wants to have an edge at maintaining overall health. However, the certifications also tell us that Athletic Greens was built for professional athletes who want to guarantee that they wouldn’t be disqualified just because they drank a green shake.

How to take

The directions per serving are pretty standard for greens products. According to their website:

  • Grab your favorite glass or shaker
  • Measure 5-10 ounces of cold water (adjust the amount to your taste, you can use less than 5oz or more than 10oz if you’d like)
  • Add your water first – this is an important step as it allows the powder to mix much more easily
  • Add 1 scoop of Athletic Greens powder
  • Shake or stir until fully blended
  • Drink and enjoy!

How to take Athletic Greens

Benefits of taking Athletic Greens

  • Helpful for gut health, especially with digestive enzymes
  • Can boost energy levels without stimulants
  • Can help lower stress levels
  • Has ingredients that can positively affect the immune system
  • Good daily dose of vitamins and minerals

Are there any side effects?

Athletic Greens is a specially certified and formulated greens supplement made with natural ingredients only, so from this part alone you shouldn’t really expect to have any side effects.

However, their website states that some users could have issues with bowel movements, particularly due to the “detoxification effect” of Athletic Greens. It also doesn’t help that consumers would take Athletic Greens first thing in the morning, so their empty stomach would probably not take that much “green” too kindly that early. They do promise that with consistent use, this effect would go away.

Should you experience some weird side effect, the website recommends lowering the dosage until you work your way up to the full serving size.

Alternative to Athletic Greens

There are many different types of super green powders on the marketing, but by far the closest alternative to Athletic Greens has to be SuperGreen Tonik.

My Verdict on Athletic Greens

Athletic Greens is a greens supplement that not only gives you a healthy boost of key vitamins, minerals, and greens, but also guarantees product purity for those who have professional sports in mind. The vitamin and minerals blend is really premium, but we can’t say the same for the rest of the formula which was hit or miss.

Regardless, Athletic Greens is one of the highly certified greens supplements we have on the market. Users can rest assured that they’re not drinking anything purposely harmful to their bodies, and this alone should be more than enough to entice buyers.
